Seahawks QB Geno Smith recalls 'terrible moment' of offseason

Some would call it exciting times in Seattle as a new regime is taking over under head coach Mike Macdonald. Others may feel differently.

Seahawks QB Geno Smith feels the latter, at least he did at the start of the offseason when the team parted ways with head coach Pete Carroll.

"That day is a day I'll probably remember forever, just because of how things happened for me here," Smith said, via Grant Gordon of NFL.com. "Obviously, coach Carroll is a big influence on my career, helped me out a bunch when I came to this organization. Really helped me, thrust me into the spotlight that I'm in now. For me, it was kind of a terrible moment to see someone that I love so much, having to part ways with him."

It's not surprising Smith feels this way as he was able to revive his NFL career with Carroll following unsuccessful stints with the Chargers (2018), Giants (2017) and Jets (2013-16).

In 2022, the 33-year-old was even named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year after leading the league in completion percentage.

However, Smith will now enter his 11th season with a new head coach and lots of uncertainty.

"New coaching staff, old coaching staff, I got everything to prove," Smith added. "That's every day, that's the way I wake up every day."

Smith knows he won't be handed the starting job despite coming off back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons. Seattle traded for QB Sam Howell, who is only 23, this offseason and will surely give him an opportunity to prove he can be the team's starter.

Nonetheless, Smith is putting his trust and confidence in Macdonald, who he believes can help he and the Seahawks continue trending in the right direction.

"From what I've seen so far, he's got a vision," Smith finished. "He's got a plan. He already laid it out for us as a team and it's our job to help him and his job to help us get there."
